Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Top Matthew D. Warrick, M.D. Welcome to the division of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine in the department of anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. Patient Care Our division specializes in the comprehensive treatment of perioperative pain for patients at UF Health Jacksonville. We complete more than 3,000 peripheral nerve blocks a year between the main hospital on the downtown campus, the attached outpatient surgery center and our hospital at UF Health North. As a trauma center, many of our techniques are employed for fracture surgery. However, elective orthopaedic case volume continues to grow, and upper and lower extremity blocks are used to care for patients receiving sports medicine, hand and wrist surgery, joint replacements and podiatry operations. Advanced perioperative pain management techniques, such as thoracic epidural placement and ultrasound guided paravertebral blocks, are employed to care for patients undergoing large general surgery cases in which pain control might prove challenging. We also employ a variety of non-opioid-based pain medications to lessen the adverse effects of opioids, decrease discomfort and/or supplement nerve blocks. We believe in a team-based approach to post-operative pain control and recovery after surgery to help ensure the techniques we provide not only decrease pain in post-operative recovery room, but have extended benefits that allow patients to return to normal activities more quickly and comfortably. To achieve these goals, we work closely with surgeons, physical therapists, nurses and pharmacists at UF Health to ensure the pain control we provide has lasting and meaningful benefits to our patients. Most importantly, our team of specially trained board-certified anesthesiologists, advanced practice providers, residents and fellows collaborate to adapt and evolve our practice to meet our patients’ diverse needs. UF Health Anesthesiology – Jacksonville Education In addition to training physicians within the department's four-year, ACGME-accredited Anesthesiology Residency Program, faculty of the division offer a one-year fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine. Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship Research As a division, our research interests center on improving patient outcomes relating to pain control and recovery after complex orthopaedic procedures. For example, the division has received national grants to evaluate the best anesthetic methods to care for elderly patients undergoing emergent fracture surgery. We look forward to caring for you and your family and we are committed to working with you and your surgical specialists to ensure you have a quick and comfortable recovery after your procedure.
